A Whole Building Approach to Indoor Air Quality

Traditionally, specific building systems are designed, built, modified and managed as if they were in isolation from each other. This can result in buildings that are a collection of conflicting technologies rather than an integrated whole.

The Maine Indoor Air Quality Council (MIAQC) promotes a whole building, “systems” approach, i.e.: individual building components and subsystems must be considered collectively in terms of their interaction with each other, and their joint IAQ impact on building occupants and building performance.

Failure to consider these interactions increases the risk of structural issues and systems failures that can result in health and safety concerns for building owners and occupants.
